The RISE+ Framework: Trauma-Informed Therapy for Individuals Ready to Break the Cycle
A compassionate, evidence-based approach to healing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), attachment wounds, and family of origin patterns, so you can stop managing your life and start actually living it.
What Brings Most People to Therapy, and What Is Actually Going On
Most people arrive at therapy with a surface-level concern.
They want to manage their anger better. They want to stop snapping at their children.
They want to feel less anxious about money, less distant from their partner, less like they are running on empty despite doing everything right.
What they rarely expect to discover is that the pattern they are trying to fix has a much longer history than this week, this year, or even this decade.
For many high-functioning adults in Singapore, childhood experiences were not visibly traumatic. There were no broken bones. The family was intact. Nobody would have called it neglect. And yet something was missing; the consistent emotional attunement, the safety to feel and express fully, the modelling of how to repair after conflict. This is what researchers call Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): early experiences that do not have to be dramatic to be deeply formative.
The RISE+ Framework is a working model developed from clinical work with clients who sit in exactly this space; high-achieving, self-aware, and genuinely confused about why knowing their patterns has not stopped them from repeating them.
The answer, in almost every case, is that understanding alone cannot heal what the nervous system learned in relationship. That requires a different kind of work.
What Is the RISE+ Framework?
RISE+ is a trauma-informed therapeutic framework developed to help individuals, parents, professionals, and couples heal from the lasting effects of adverse childhood experiences, family of origin wounds, and attachment disruptions.
It works on two levels simultaneously. Firstly, as a map of the dimensions of life that childhood wounding affects, and as a therapeutic process for how genuine, lasting healing actually happens.
Unlike approaches that focus on a single technique or symptom, RISE+ addresses the whole person: the relationships they navigate, the stories they carry, the body that holds what the mind cannot fully access, the emotions that have been managed rather than felt, and the patterns that quietly run their financial decisions, their parenting, and their most important relationships.
It is not about fixing what is broken. It is about building what was never built, the stable internal foundation from which lasting change becomes possible.
Layer One: The Five Dimensions of Healing
RISE+ recognises that adverse childhood experiences do not damage just one area of a person’s life. They shape the entire landscape. The framework addresses five interconnected dimensions — each of which carries the imprint of early experiences, and each of which holds enormous capacity for healing.
Relational: The Foundation of Everything
Relational healing is where RISE+ begins, because relationship is where the original wounding occurred, and where the deepest healing is available.
For adults who grew up in emotionally unavailable, unpredictable, or critical households, the relationship with the self becomes the first casualty. The inner voice is harsh. Self-trust is fragile. Patterns of abandoning the self to maintain connection with others become deeply habitual.
These internal relational patterns then project outward into partnerships, parenting, friendships, and professional relationships, creating cycles of conflict, withdrawal, over-functioning, or emotional distance that feel impossible to break despite every effort.
When the relationship with self stabilises, the relationship with others begins to shift naturally. This is the foundational premise of RISE+, and it is consistently borne out in clinical practice.
Key themes: attachment wounds, inner critic, self-abandonment, relational trauma, co-dependency, people-pleasing
Inner Awareness: From Intellectual Understanding to Real Insight
Many people who come to therapy already have significant self-awareness. They can identify their triggers, describe their childhood dynamics, and explain why they behave the way they do. And yet nothing changes.
This is one of the most common and frustrating experiences for high-functioning adults: the gap between knowing and changing. RISE+ addresses this directly.
Inner Awareness in this framework is not about collecting more information about yourself. It is about shifting the lens from self-blame and shame to genuine curiosity and compassion. It is the movement from “what is wrong with me?” to “what happened to me, and what did I need?”
This shift is not semantic. It fundamentally changes the relationship between insight and action, and creates the conditions under which cognitive understanding can finally become lived behaviour.
Key themes: shame healing, cognitive reframing, intergenerational patterns, family of origin work, identity, self-compassion
Somatic: What the Body Holds
Adverse childhood experiences do not only shape thoughts and relationship patterns. They shape the nervous system itself. The body holds what could not be expressed, processed, or made safe to feel.
For many clients, particularly those raised in households where emotional expression was discouraged or unsafe, the body has been living in a low-grade state of alert for years. Chronic tension, fatigue, digestive symptoms, breathing patterns, or a pervasive sense of being disconnected from physical sensation are common presentations.
The somatic dimension of RISE+ draws on polyvagal theory and somatic awareness to help clients reconnect gently with bodily sensation as information. The body knows things the analytical mind bypasses. Learning to listen to it, rather than override it, is a core part of sustainable healing.
Key themes: nervous system regulation, polyvagal-informed therapy, somatic awareness, body-based trauma, chronic stress, breathwork
Emotional: Building Capacity, Not Just Coping Skills
Emotional dysregulation is almost always framed as a skill problem. The assumption is that if someone can just learn the right technique, they will be able to manage their emotions better.
RISE+ understands emotional dysregulation as fundamentally a relational wound. We learn to feel, and to tolerate feeling in relationship. When early relationships were dismissive, frightening, or emotionally absent, we either learned to turn the volume up (to finally be heard) or turn it entirely off (to stay safe). Neither serves adult life.
The Emotional dimension of RISE+ focuses on gradually building capacity through the slow, supported expansion of what is tolerable, expressible, and genuinely connectable. Anger, grief, fear, and tenderness all have a place here.
Key themes: emotional regulation, anger processing, grief work, emotional neglect recovery, window of tolerance, affect regulation
(+) The Plus: Where Life Actually Happens
Healing does not stay in the therapy room. It has to become embedded in real life in how a person parents their children, navigates financial decisions, shows up in their marriage, and relates to their own body and ambitions.
The Plus dimension of RISE+ holds all of these extended areas: financial patterns rooted in childhood scarcity or shame, parenting responses triggered by unprocessed history, career self-sabotage driven by deep unworthiness beliefs, and physical wellbeing affected by years of nervous system dysregulation.
These are not separate problems requiring separate solutions. They are expressions of the same foundational wounding and they respond to the same foundational healing.
Key themes: financial trauma healing, money mindset, parenting from wounds, burnout recovery, career identity, embodied wellbeing
When the Foundation Is Unstable: Understanding the Dysregulated System

Visualise the RISE+ framework as a pyramid. At the base sits the Relational dimension — the relationship with self. When that base is unstable, the entire pyramid inverts, balancing precariously on its most fragile point.
This is what dysregulation rooted in adverse childhood experiences looks like in adult life:
The relationship with self is full of critical voices and harsh inner noise, often borrowed from early experiences of being unseen, judged, or conditionally loved. Because that voice feels like truth, it projects outward: reading criticism in a partner’s silence, bracing for rejection as a default, interpreting neutral situations through the lens of old threat.
The insights layer is busy but static. There is a great deal of thinking, analysing, and self-explaining. But the understanding floats, unintegrated, above a nervous system that never got the message that safety is now available. Knowing does not become doing.
The somatic layer is either disconnected or overwhelmed; the person lives from the neck up, calling it high functioning, while the body continues to carry what the mind cannot process.
The emotional layer is reactive, unpredictable, or completely shut down. Without a stable relational foundation beneath it, emotions have nowhere to land softly. They erupt, disappear, or spill sideways into sarcasm, withdrawal, or physical symptoms.
And so the extended layer (financial decisions, parenting responses, relational patterns at work and at home, etc) becomes the site of exhausting, demoralising repetition. The same arguments. The same financial self-sabotage. The same shrinking of genuine ambitions.
This is not a character failing. It is a structural problem, and it has a structural solution.
When the Foundation Is Healed: What Becomes Possible
When the relational foundation, the relationship with self, is tended to with care, the pyramid rights itself. The structure becomes stable. And from that stability, each dimension begins to shift.
Insights begin to land rather than simply float. They integrate into lived behaviour because the nervous system is no longer in survival mode. Somatic signals shift from noise to navigation. The body becomes an ally rather than an emergency.
Emotional regulation becomes less effortful when there is finally enough internal space to hold them without being overwhelmed. Feelings move through rather than hijacking.
And from this grounded, regulated, relationally secure foundation, the extended dimensions of life begin to change in ways that no amount of willpower or strategy could previously create. Financial decisions come from sufficiency rather than survival. Parenting responses come from present love rather than triggered history. Professional ambition is sustained because it is no longer quietly undermined from within.
This is the direction of healing that RISE+ is built around: not fixing what is broken, but laying what was never built.
Layer Two: The RISE+ Therapeutic Process
The second layer of the RISE+ framework describes how healing actually moves in therapy — the four movements that guide each session, each intensive, and each client’s broader arc of change.

Recognise the Pattern
Before anything else can shift, the pattern must be named without judgment. Not analysed to death. Not immediately problem-solved. Simply seen.
For many clients, this is already significant. The pattern has been running on automatic for decades. The first movement in RISE+ therapy is slowing down enough to notice it clearly: “This is what I do. This is when I do it. This is the cost it carries.” From the kind of honest, compassionate witnessing that many people have never received — from anyone, including themselves.
This is trauma-informed awareness: recognising patterns not as evidence of being broken, but as evidence of how intelligently the system adapted to what it experienced.
Integrate the Story
Once a pattern is named, we trace it back; not to relive trauma, but to understand it in context. Where did this begin? What was it protecting? What did you need then that you are still seeking now in ways that no longer serve you?
Integration does not mean the past stops mattering. It means the past stops running the show from the shadows. When a person can hold their story with both honesty and genuine compassion, that “this happened, it affected me, and I made sense of it the only way I knew how”, the grip it holds over present-day choices begins to loosen.
This is also where the intergenerational dimension becomes visible – the cycles that were passed down, often unintentionally, from parents and grandparents carrying their own unprocessed histories. Healing here is not just personal. It is relational, familial, and reaching.
Soothe the System
Understanding and integration must be accompanied by nervous system regulation. Otherwise, insight remains purely cognitive and the body stays in a state of chronic vigilance.
Drawing on somatic experiencing, polyvagal-informed approaches, and body-based interventions, this movement creates the physiological conditions under which real change can be received and held. Breathing practices. Grounding. Learning to recognise the difference between threat responses and genuine present-moment safety.
It is not about achieving permanent calm. It is about building access to your window of tolerance which refers to the internal space where genuine choice, rather than automatic reaction, becomes possible.
Embody New Choice
The final movement is where healing becomes a lived experience rather than a concept.
Embodied action is not about performing a new version of yourself. It is about practising, gradually and imperfectly, the responses, choices, and ways of being that align with who you are becoming rather than who you had to be.
This might look like pausing before reacting. Setting a boundary you could previously name but had never actually enforced. Making a financial decision from sufficiency rather than fear. Staying present in a difficult conversation instead of shutting down. Choosing from genuine desire rather than obligation.
Each small embodied choice becomes evidence of change. The nervous system updates. The story stops running on autopilot. A new normal, one that was chosen, begins to form.
Who RISE+ Is For
RISE+ was developed specifically for people who often do not see themselves as “trauma survivors” but who carry the quiet weight of what was never given, never safe, or never spoken about in childhood.
They’re quietly confused about why self-awareness alone has not been enough to change the patterns that keep showing up in their most important relationships, their finances, and their relationship with themselves.
They often come from families where the difficulty was not visible. There was no dramatic incident to point to. There was simply not enough emotional attunement. Not enough safety to be fully themselves. Not enough modelling of healthy repair after conflict. What the research now calls ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) do not require violence or crisis to be deeply formative. Repeated experiences of emotional invisibility, conditional approval, and nervous system dysregulation shape a person just as profoundly. Sometimes more so.
RISE+ holds this truth without minimising it. What happened was not your fault. The patterns you developed in response made complete sense. And change is entirely possible by building a different relationship with it.
You may be a good fit for RISE+ if you:
- understand your patterns intellectually but feel stuck in repeating them
- are a high-functioning adult who suspects childhood experiences are quietly shaping your present-day relationships and decisions
- want to parent or partner differently but find old reactions surfacing despite your best intentions
- carry anxiety about money that does not match your actual financial circumstances
- feel disconnected from your body, your emotions, or both
- have tried other approaches and found them helpful but incomplete
- want healing that is deep, sustainable, and rooted in understanding — not just symptom management
Why Trauma-Informed Therapy for ACEs and Family of Origin Wounds Matters
We live in a culture that is very good at producing high-functioning people who are quietly struggling.
The busyness is real. The success is real. And so is the disconnection, the low-grade anxiety, the loneliness beneath a full calendar, and the sense that something essential is being missed.
Standard approaches to therapy often address symptoms without reaching the root. They teach coping strategies without addressing the nervous system state that makes those strategies necessary in the first place. They offer insight without integration, and information without embodiment.
RISE+ was developed because the most important healing is often the quietest: building the internal relational foundation that adverse childhood experiences disrupted. Healing the connection with self that makes genuine connection with others possible. Updating the nervous system from survival to safety.
This is not a quick fix. It is a genuine, grounded process, and it works because it meets people where they actually are, rather than where they think they should be.
Frequently Asked Questions About RISE+ and Trauma-Informed Therapy
What is the RISE+ Framework?
RISE+ is a trauma-informed therapeutic framework that addresses the relational, insight, somatic, emotional, and life-application dimensions of healing from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and family of origin wounds. It works both as a map of the areas of life that need attention and as a therapeutic process (Recognise, Integrate, Soothe, Embody) for how lasting change happens.
Who is RISE+ therapy for?
RISE+ is designed for adults, particularly high-functioning working parents and professionals, who are living with the long-term effects of childhood emotional neglect, attachment disruptions, or adverse childhood experiences. Many clients are self-aware and have tried other approaches, but feel something deeper is still unaddressed.
Is RISE+ only for people with severe childhood trauma?
No. RISE+ was specifically developed to serve people whose childhood experiences were not visibly traumatic but were nonetheless formative and limiting. Emotional neglect, conditional approval, chronic relational unpredictability, and the cumulative effects of small adverse experiences all fall within the scope of what RISE+ addresses. You do not need a dramatic story to deserve deep healing.
How is RISE+ different from standard therapy?
RISE+ addresses the full system ( relational, cognitive, somatic, emotional, and practical ) rather than focusing on a single symptom or skill. It is grounded in a trauma-informed, non-pathologising approach that honours the intelligence behind every coping pattern, and works at the pace of the nervous system rather than the pace of intellectual understanding.
Can RISE+ help with financial anxiety and money patterns?
Financial patterns rooted in childhood scarcity, shame, or survival are explicitly included in the RISE+ framework. Many clients find that money anxiety, self-sabotage around income, or guilt around spending are not financial problems. They are expressions of unhealed relational and nervous system wounds. RISE+ addresses these at the root.
How do I get started with RISE+ therapy?
You can begin with the free RISE+ Self-Assessment on our website, which gives you a personalised readiness overview across all five dimensions. From there, you can book a complimentary discovery call to explore whether individual therapy, a healing intensive, or a self-paced program is the right next step for you.
Your Next Step
If something in this resonated, if you recognise yourself in the pattern of knowing what you need to do but still not being able to fully do it, that recognition matters. It is not a sign that you are too broken to heal. It is a sign that you have been working without the right foundation.
The RISE+ Self-Assessment is a free, 10-minute tool that gives you a personalised picture of where you are across all five dimensions of the framework. It offers a starting point, and a map for what to focus on next.
At CLARiE Psychotherapy, we offer trauma-informed individual and couple therapy, RISE+ Healing Intensives, and self-paced programs for individuals, parents and couples healing from family of origin wounds and adverse childhood experiences.
